Australian Watchdog Cracks Down on Illegal Gambling Site Thepokies.net

The Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) has taken decisive action against unlawful wagering, directing Australian internet service providers to restrict access to the website thepokies.net. This represents one of the most substantial measures taken against a single gambling platform thus far.

The ACMA estimates that tens of millions of dollars have been gambled on the site, which was drawing in an approximate 30,000 Australian users monthly according to statistics from Similarweb.

An inquiry by the ACMA determined that the platform was providing online casino-type games, which are prohibited in Australia under the 2001 Interactive Gambling Act.

“We have received a greater number of grievances about thepokies.net than any other illicit gambling website this year, indicating the considerable effect it is having on the public,” stated ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin.

“Complaints encompassed individuals suffering substantial monetary losses and encountering difficulties accessing their winnings or funds more generally,” she appended, emphasizing the ruinous financial and psychological impact these platforms can inflict.

“Restricting access to websites such as this transmits a powerful message that the ACMA is capable of and will take steps to disrupt unlawful operators targeting Australians,” O’Loughlin affirmed resolutely.

The ACMA also pursued measures against numerous other illegal gambling websites, including Azure Hand, Abo Casino, Betroom, 777Bay, Space Lilly, Jet Casino, Katsu Bet, and Winz, mandating internet providers to block access to those platforms as well.

Since the ACMA commenced enforcing updated regulations against illicit offshore gambling in 2017, over 160 unlawful services have withdrawn from the Australian market, illustrating the effectiveness of their continuous endeavors.

Authorities are truly taking a hard line on unlawful wagering, not solely by restricting access to online platforms but also through collaboration with various sectors, pursuing individual perpetrators, and raising public awareness.

Olorine cautioned, “Should these platforms opt to simply retain your funds, a frequent occurrence as we are aware, there is genuinely no recourse available to you.”
